Drum roll please.......

This is by far the most exciting post!!  First, we are so close to seeing our Marines come home AANNNDDD we can finally say that.....WE RAN TO AFGHANISTAN!!!  To date, our total mileage is 8,651 miles!  At this point, we could say that we're on our way back from Afghanistan - kind of like our Marines!  I know I say this every post, but it really is amazing how many friends and family have joined us across the United States to help us reach our goal.  Whether you were training for a marathon, spinning at the gym, out for a leisure walk with the kids, or running for your Marine, we surpassed our goal together.

As we prepare for our Marine's return, take a moment to look back at what you've accomplished while he's been away.  Not only did you run to Afghanistan, but many of us have children that were raised for 7 months by mom alone, home projects were completed by wives who became more independent, weddings have been planned, parents have patiently waited, babies have been born!  So much has happened while our Marines have been gone and we should all be proud of not just our Marines, but ourselves.

Thank you so much for staying motivated!  To all the long distance friends and families who contributed to our goal, I hope we all get to meet each other at the homecoming.  Thanks to everyone for supporting our goal - we finally RAN TO AFGHANISTAN!

See you at homecoming!

Runner Profile

Welcome to September!  I am so excited to share that we have LESS THAN 1,000 MILES LEFT until we can say we ran to Afghanistan!!  We are currently at 6,067 miles.  Keep it up!  We're almost there!

In order to keep our eye on the prize and stay motivated, I want to introduce you to just one many big mile contributors - Kim Williamson.  You may recognize her as she is often seen running the trails on Camp Lejeune.

Kim is a mother of three kids who range from ages 5-23.  Her husband is in Headquarters and Service Company and has been with 2D LAR since September 2010.  Kim has been running since high school and also enjoys racking up the miles on her bike.  To her, running is her time to relax and let her mind roam.  It gives her time to think about plans for the week, what to add to her grocery list, when she needs to mow the lawn again, etc.  And, like most of us, Kim loves to eat!  So her daily workouts help her maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Her kids - Courtney (23), Cullen (11), and Katie (5) are also supporters of our goal to run to Afghanistan and in between college at LSU for Courtney, Soccer for Cullen, and Ballet for Katie, they have all contributed miles.

Thank you Kim and family for all your miles and motivation!  We hope to share another runner profile with you as we continue our Run to Afghanistan!

Stay motivated and keep the miles coming!

Thanks to your commitment

Thanks to your commitment, we are currently at 5,300 miles!  We are almost there!  It is truly amazing to see the miles roll in every week.  Despite the busy work schedules, vacations, and summer activities, we've steadily received your emails and Facebook posts, updating us with your miles.  Thank you so much.

On another note, how great is it to say that we are at the halfway point in the deployment?!  Whatever it is that keeps you going, keep it up!  In no time, we'll be discussing homecoming plans, where to hang welcome home banners, and what to do for post-deployment leave.  We can also proudly tell our Marines that we RAN TO AFGHANISTAN!!

Look for another post later this week, highlighting one of our committed runners.

Keep the miles coming and stay motivated!

Mileage Update

Hi Everyone!
Welcome to July - another month closer to our Marines coming home and our goal of running to Afghanistan!  We currently stand at 2,901 miles!  Thank you so much for your hard work and commitment so far.  In addition to our local families in the Camp Lejeune area, we have gained support (and miles!) from many 2d LAR families across the United States.  It's amazing to see the commitment we all have to reaching this goal.

Our next big local race is on July 23rd - Run the Beach 8k at Onslow Beach.  Click here for a registration form  We look forward to seeing some familiar faces and racking up the miles at this event!

Also, we are in the planning stages with the Family Readiness Team to create our own 2d LAR Run to Afghanistan 5k on Camp Lejeune!  Right now, the plan is to have a 5k / family picnic in October.  This would be the last month before our Marines come home and (hopefully) our last big effort to get to and pass our 7,000 mile marker!  Look out for more information on this event.

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer!  Keep the miles coming and stay motivated!

1,371 MILES IN JUST ONE MONTH!!!

Thanks to so many spouses and families that are out walking, running, biking and every other activity we are well on our way to going the distance to our Marines in Afghanistan!  In just one month we have traveled 1,371 miles.

Continue to email me your miles (run2af@gmail.com) as well as any ideas that you have to grow our group and support each other.

Our weekly Saturday walk/run is stroller friendly and is a great way to relieve some stress and put in a couple miles together.

If you leave the area or are not located in the Camp Lejeune area, please send me an email so I can add your name to our roster and record any miles that you are doing each week.

I think it is going to very exciting to be able to tell our Marines in just a couple months our group went the distance to their location.  By the time we reach them they will be on their back to us.

Stay motivated and know that each step forward is a step closer to our Marines.

Way to go 2D LAR Families!!!

We are well on our way to meeting our goal of going the distance to our Marines in Afghanistan!  We have completed almost 700 miles so far.  We are continuing to meet on Saturday mornings at the Greenway Trail across from Marston Pavilion on base.  If you are not in the area, please continue to send me an email with the miles you have achieved for the week.

If you run, walk, bike, swim, or any other activity that has you traveling a distance, count those miles and keep track each day.  It is a small way to stay motivated and help the days by quicker until we are celebrating the return of our Marines.

Spread the word to other spouses and families!  It is not too late to join us and the more the merrier!

If you have any questions, please email me at run2af@gmail.com.

Stay motivated,

Kathryn Conner
